Do-It-Yourself Car Air Condition Recharging

The majority of car owners do not concern themselves with how the air condition system works until, it becomes faulty. Where the air conditioning does not work like it should, a car owner may opt to seek the services of a mechanic. However, it is possible for car owners to personally recharge their air conditioning. When recharging the air conditioning, car owners need to have all the necessary equipment at hand. It would be impossible to perform the recharge without having the appropriate refrigerant at hand. Only the appropriate pressurized refrigerant should be used. Car owners should consult with their user manuals on the type of refrigerant used by their cars. Car owners are advised against mixing different types of refrigerant because it renders the recharge ineffective. In addition, the use of flammable refrigerants such as propane and butane is prohibited.  

Once the equipment is ready, before car owners may delve into the task of recharging the air conditioning, it is important that they also take the necessary precautions. Car refrigerant has been known to be hazardous resulting in frostbite especially where the eyes and the skin have been exposed. Accordingly, caution must be taken when handling refrigerant. This involves wearing goggles to protect the eyes and covering up the skin. Other than the protection gear, a recharge kit also comes in handy. Stores dealing with car parts and departmental stores are some of the locations that car owners may purchase recharge kits. It is recommended that car owners purchase a recharge kit that comes inclusive of pressure gauge. The gauge helps in simplifying the troubleshooting. Furthermore, the gauge allows car owners to keep track of exactly how much refrigerant is contained within the system thereby making the recharging process that much easier. 

The first recharging step involves the car owner verifying if the system contains any refrigerant. This is done by fitting the charging hose on the port with low pressure. Where no refrigerant is evident, moisture within the system should be gotten rid of. Refrigerant is depleted by leaks. Spraying fittings with soapy water may help car owners check for and repair leaks. The car owners should then ensure that the compressor works effectively and that no form of debris is obstructing the condensing coils. 

The refrigerant can and the recharge valve and hose may then be connected together. To puncture the can's top, the valve may be turned. To release refrigerant into the hose, the valves should be turned back out. This helps to remove any moisture. Locate the charging port with low pressure and also crank the car engine. At this point the AC should be turned on high fan and high cool.  To allow the can dispense the refrigerant through the hose, the valve should be opened. It is important that the can's up is kept up at all times. The valve should then be closed and the hose disconnected. If the refrigerant was sufficient to recharge the system, the air from the car's AC vents should be cold blowing between 38 and 45 degrees.
